On 9 June 1940, the Empire Commerce was sailing off Margate, Kent, England, when she hit a mine. Severely damaged, she was towed to Mucking Sands where she was destroyed on the spot. However, all the crew perished. This cargo ship was the first of the Empire class lost to enemy action.
