Son of Charles Rasmussen and Alma Olivia Fich from Springhill, Nova Scotia.
On 23 June 1942, Torvanger drifted away from convoy HX-194. At 4:29 pm, she was torpedoed by U-84 around 450 miles (724 km) west of the Azores and sank by the stern in three minutes, in position 39°40'N/41°30'W. The 33 survivors boarded lifeboats. On the 30th, the captain and 15 sailors were rescued by the MV Ruys, from the Netherlands, in position 39°53'N/34°43'W, and disembarked in Liverpool, England. On 5 July, the remaining shipwrecked sailors were spotted off Horta, Azores Islands, and were towed to Fayal. On the 15th, they boarded the SS Lima and arrived in Lisbon, Portugal on the 24th before being taken back to Gibraltar.
