Son of Charles Edward Rector and Agnes Rector from Parrsboro, Cumberland, Nova Scotia. Husband of Edith Alma Fletcher from Plaster Rock, New Brunswick.

On 29 May 1942, at 02:17 am, the Western Head was sailing unescorted when she was torpedoed by U-107 50 miles (70 km) east of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and sank in Windward Passage, position 19°57'N/74°18'W.
