Son of Isaac Smith and Sarah Paul from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

On 3 December 1942, the Empire Dabchick was sailing with convoy ONS-146 when she was torpedoed at 9:40 am by U-183 about 200 miles (322km) south-east of Sable Island, Nova Scotia, on her way to Saint John, New Brunswick, position 43°00'N/58°17'W. The captain, the 36 crew members and the 11 gunners lost their lives.
