On 18 November 1940, the Lilian Moller sailed from Calcutta, India, to London, England, with convoy SL-53, which dispersed. At around 5 pm, the cargo ship was torpedoed 250 miles (402 km) north-west of Ireland by the Italian submarine Maggiore Francesco Baracca (I-10) and sank in position 52°57'N/18°05'W or 53°N/17°'W, depending on the source. The entire crew of 50 sailors, including the captain, lost their lives.
