On 24 September 1942, the West Chetac, away from the TRIN-14 convoy, was torpedoed at 9:24 am by U-175 around 100 miles (161 km) north of Georgetown (English Guyana, now Guiana) and sank by the bow in two minutes, in position 08°45'N/57°0'W. Of the crew, 31 lost their lives. The 19 survivors were picked up by the American destroyer USS Roe (DD-418) around 20 miles (32 km) off Trinidad and landed in Port of Spain.
