Burial/memorial information
On 12 April 1941, the Nicolaos D.L. was boarded by the German raider Kormoran after receiving several shells. The cargo ship, which refused to sink even after being scuttled by the Germans, was left abandoned in position 01°54'S/22°12'W, and sank on her own approximately 900 miles (1,448 km) south-west of Freetown, Sierra Leone. The 38 crew members were taken prisoner of war and taken to captivity in Germany, where Swindells died.
