On 15 January 1942, at 11:17 pm, the Diala, which had been away from convoy ON-52 since the 11th, was torpedoed by U-553 300 miles (483 km) east-south-east of Cape Race, Newfoundland, position 44°50'N/46°50'W. The wreck was abandoned. The captain, 6 crew members and one gunner were rescued by SS Telefora de Larrinage, which landed them in New York on the 29th. The 49 other crew members and 9 gunners were never seen again. The wreck was sunk by U-587 on 23 March in position 47°00'N/37°00'W.
