Son of Howard Tustain and Constance Bates from Toronto, Ontario. Husband of Cécile Alfreda Gareau from Montréal, Québec.

On 22 February 1942, at around 12.44pm, the German battleship Gneisenau opened fire towards the A.D. Duff about 625 miles (982 km) east of Cape Race, Newfoundland. A new German salvo of around 32 projectiles hit the cargo ship at position 47°12'N/40°13'W. The Gneisenau took on 37 sailors who were made prisoners of war.
