Brother of Captain Lewis White Vatcher (1890-1973), merchant navy, and cousin of Flying Officer Walter Cyril Vatcher, RAF service number 146339, killed in action at Caen, Normandy, France, on 26 June 1944 while serving with 174 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
Rose Castle was torpedoed at anchor, awaiting convoy WB-9, by U-518 off Bell Island, Conception Bay, Newfoundland, position 47°36'N/52°58'W.
