On 15 February 1942, at 0:26 am, she was torpedoed by U-98 400 miles (644 km) south-east of Cape Race, Newfoundland, after breaking away from convoy ON-62 heading for Buenos Aires, Argentina. At 0:46 am, she received a coup de grâce that broke her in two and sank her in position 41°15'N/47°18'W. The captain, 44 crew members and 5 gunners were never seen again after being interrogated by the Germans.
