Son of Samuel and Eva Soomsky. of Columbus, Ohio.
He attended East High School, Columbus Public Schools and graduated in June 1939. He also attended the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio during the academic year 1939-1940 and took a leave of absence from that institution to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Sgt. Morris Howitz (left) and P/O Sanford S. Soomsky, lifelong friends from Columbus, Ohio, USA, on embarkation leave, August 1942.<P>
Note: Morris Howitz later transferrd to the U.S. Army Air Forces, Eighth Air Force, Sixth Fighter Wing and received the rank of Second Lieutenant in March 1943. He was killed on active service at the age of 23 during a training accident at U.S.A.A.F. Station 342, Royal Air Force Station Atcham, Shropshire, England on May 30, 1943.
