On January 6, 1942, the Baron Erskine was on route from Tampa, Florida, USA, to Garston, England, when she was torpedoed at 4:27 p.m. by U-701 360 miles (580 km) east-southeast of Cape Farevwell, south of Greenland, position 57°27'N/32°36'W. The captain, his crew of 33 men and seven gunners survived the attack and were interrogated by the Germans, but these castaways were never seen again.
