Burial/memorial information
Brother of Private Denis Cyril Matthews, regimental number H-6197, 1st Battalion Winnipeg Grenadiers, killed in action in Hong Kong on December 19th, 1941.
Served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers (MG) - NPAM - regimental number 3510, from June 13th, 1938 to September 1st, 1939, then with the regular forces of this unit in Manitoba, in Jamaica with Y Force, in Hong Kong with C Force, in Japan as a prisoner of war.
To commemorate his sacrifice, the Manitoba government named East Matthews Lake located west of Semmens Lake in his honor in 1995.
Cited in the Order of the Day (MID) 1939-1945 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal 1939-1945, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp.
