In 1939, Lloyd served with the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment – NPAM, then with the regular force of that regiment on 1 July 1940, with the 1st Midland Regiment on 1 October 1940, and with the 1st Battalion, Royal Rifles of Canada, on 18 October 1941.
He served in Ontario, in New Brunswick, in Hong Kong with Force C and in Japan as prisoner of war. He had 1,223 days of service, including 743 overseas.
