Son of Daniel and Ellen (née Mulligan) Joynt, of Regina, Saskatchewan. He was the brother of William, Hazel, Don, Alfreda, Edwin and Angus. He attested on 10 October 1940 stating he was single and his occupation was with the Police Force. He attended Grades 1 through 8; 1921 to 1928 at Cunard Public School and Grades 8 through 10; 1929-1931 at Rouleau High School. He went on to attend Luther College in Regina, Saskatchewan for 1933 - 1934.
