P/O Ernest James Richardson served as Bomb Aimer on #12 (RAF) Sqdn. and was the only Canadian on board Lancaster ND-679. The operation on the night of May 27/28, 1944 was a raid on the Rothe Erde railway yards at Aachen, Germany. The yards were seriously damaged and a large proportion of delayed-action bombs were dropped. The local people were impressed that the whole raid lasted only 12 minutes. 12 Lancasters, or 7.0 per cent of the force were lost. The crew of ND-679 was lost with a trace.
