A/Cst. Abel wanted to be a police officer for a long time. He completed a 2 year Law Enforcement Program at Lethbridge Community College. A/Cst. Abel was a summer student and a police officer for one year with the Pigeon Lake Alberta Police Force. While A/Cst. Abel was waiting as an RCMP applicant, he volunteered as an RCMP Auxiliary Constable. A/Cst. Abel was studying Criminology. Cpl. Johanson was patrolling in a police car with A/Cst. Abel when it came head on into a half-ton pickup that was driving the wrong way with no lights on. The occupants of both vehicles were killed.
