Surgeon Powers was an avid athlete in University who starred on the hockey team and was a goalie and captain of the McGill intercollegiate hockey team. He was Canada’s leading medico-legal expert and the person responsible for planning and organizing Canada’s first crime laboratories in Regina and Ottawa. Surgeon Powers was the first person to receive the new degree of Doctor of Medical Science in Forensic Medicine from New York University.
The plane that Surgeon Powers was in appeared to be having problems and had to turn around. On its return the plane had sheared through telephone wires only 20 feet above the ground causing it to crash into the trees. Poor visibility was the main contributing factor to the accident. Surgeon Powers had a wife Marguerite and two children.
