Son of Jack and Elley May (née Rees) Norton of Hillcrest, Alberta. S/Lt (Aviation) Norton attended Hillcrest Public School from 1928 to 1937 and Hillcrest High School from 1937 to 1941, in Hillcrest, Alberta. He followed a course of youth training as Air Frame Mechanic during 1940-41. He enlisted in the RCAF as an Air Frame Mechanic. He remustered for aircrew training with the RCAF and then resigned from the RCAF in 1945 in order to enlist as a Pilot with the Royal Naval Reserve Fleet Air Arm as Sub-Lieutenant (Aviation).
