Sergeant Shane Hank Stachnik was thirty years old when he was killed in Afghanistan on September 3, 2006 while serving with the Canadian Armed Forces as a combat military engineer. He was originally from Waskatenau, Alberta and at the time of his death was serving his second tour in Afghanistan. He was serving with the Canadian Forces in 2 Combat Engineer Regiment based at CFB Petawawa when he was killed in an ambush while leading his section during Operation Medusa, a ground offensive against the Taliban in southern Afghanistan.
Sergeant Stachnik joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1995. . He assisted with the Winnipeg flood relief in 1997. He worked with the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) in Sri Lanka after the 2004 tsunami, purifying water. There, he received a commendation for outstanding leadership in his role as water supply section commander. He had served two tours in Bosnia and was on his second tour of Afghanistan.
Sergeant Stachnik left behind his parents Hank and Avril Stachnik (2008 National Memorial (Silver) Cross Mother), his sister Deanna, his fiancée Ms Darcy Mitton, and two step children, Elliot and Samantha.

OTTAWA (BEECHWOOD) CEMETERY Ontario, Canada
OTTAWA (BEECHWOOD) CEMETERY contains 98 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 113 from the Second World War. Many of the graves are in the two veterans plots, where there is also a Cross of Sacrifice dedicated to all service casualties buried in the cemetery.
The OTTAWA CREMATION MEMORIAL is in a shelter adjoining the newer of the veterans plots in the cemetery and commemorates 26 Second World War servicemen whose remains were cremated elsewhere in Canada and the U.S.A.
