Burial/memorial information
On 26 March 1941, the Beaverdale left Halifax, Nova Scotia, bound for Liverpool, England, when she was torpedoed at 1 am on 2 April 1941 by U-48 south-east of Cape Farewell, Greenland. At 1:25 am, after the German submarine had surfaced, the cargo ship was cannoned and sunk, in position 60°50'N/29°19'W. Of the crew, 20 sailors and one gunner lost their lives. The captain and 25 men in a dinghy managed to reach Ondverdanes in Iceland. Those in a second dinghy were rescued by the Icelandic trawler Gulltoppur and landed in Reykjavik, Iceland. Transferred to the merchant ships SS Royal Scot and SS Royal Ulsterman, they were brought back to Greenock, Scotland, on 17 April.
