The crew of Lancaster DS 788 was on its operational debut. They were airborne 0003 20Feb44 from Linton-on-Ouse on a mission to Leipzig, Germany. Shot down by a night-fighter from 20,000 feet; the resulting fire destroyed the rudders causing the Lancaster to crash at Kropswolde (Groningen) in the SW outskirts of Sappemeer, Holland.
Also killed in the crash were the 19 yr old pilot F/O J.A.Frampton; P/O J.J.Astles; Sgt K.H.Bennett; Sgt K.W.Tindall RAF
Two crew members survived: F/O G.W.Reynolds was interned in Camp L3, PoW No.3537 and F.W.C.Robertson evaded.

HOOGEZAND-SAPPEMEER-(KROPSWOLDE) PROTESTANT-CHURCH Netherlands
Kropswolde, under the administration of Hoogezand-Sappemeer, is a village situated 15 kilometres south-east of Groningen on a minor road to Zuidlaren.
The HOOGEZAND-SAPPEMEER-(KROPSWOLDE) PROTESTANT-CHURCHYARD surrounds the church, which stands in the centre of the village. The graves of the five airmen are in the south-western corner.
