The Estevan Mercury Thursday, Sept. 19, 1946.<P> Tribute to Airmen in Mass Funeral Service BY KAY MACREADY<P> Mass funeral services with full military honors were held in the drill hall at Estevan airport Wednesday afternoon for the 20 of 21 RCAF personnel who met their deaths in the crash of their Dakota transport plane at the airport Sunday morning just as other parts of the world were holding thanksgiving services in commemorating victory in the Battle of Britain. These airmen, many of whom wore decorations for valor, were killed in the line of duty just as the others who had given their lives in the defence of Britain. All Canada felt the loss in this second greatest air tragedy in Canadian aviation history, and Estevan, in particular, showed its feeling of sorrow by turning out in mass to mourn with those relatives who were able to be present.<P> Submitted for the project, Operation: Picture Me. -

Memorial
In 1949, the Britannia Boating Club Memorial Park Association was formed to honour Club members killed overseas. An acre of land was purchased at Baskin's Beach on the Ottawa River. A cairn and flagpole was erected and a brass plaque honouring fallen members was attached to the plaque. The brass plaque states 'the Britannia Boating Club honours its members who gave their lives in his majesty's service during World War I 1914-1918 and World War II 1939-1945.' Landscaping was added in 1997. The Britannia Boating Club was renamed the Britannia Yacht Club (BYC). The Britannia Yacht Club (2777 Cassels Street Ottawa K2B 6N6) maintains the memorial park and cairn. The memorial park remains a popular camping area for Club members. -

London Gazette 6 Oct 1944.<P> Flying Officer Louis Eric John MURPHY (Can/J.20191), R.C.A.F., 427 (R.C.A.F.) Sqn. Flying Officer Murphy has completed very many sorties as captain of aircraft. In August, 1944, he piloted an aircraft of a bomber force detailed to attack Forte de Nieppe. Whilst over the target area the aircraft sustained severe damage. Despite this he flew the aircraft safely to base. He displayed the highest standard of airmanship, coolness and determination in a most difficult situation.
