Son of Duncan McNiven and Catherine Robertson of Nanaimo, British Columbia. Husband of Theresia Eichler of St. Peter-Freienstein, Styria, Austria.


During the First World War, he enlisted on 27 August 1915 with the 54th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, service number 443441. Transferred to the 2nd Battalion on 18 June 1916, he fought in France from the 21st. Ill, he was brought back to England and declared invalided out. He was repatriated to Canada on 13 May 1917 aboard the hospital ship HS Letitia and demobilized on 30 November 1917 in Calgary, Alberta. He died in Victoria, British Columbia, of a cerebral haemorrhage due to his military service. He was buried on the 29th in Vancouver.
