Baptized Jean Baptiste Dumais. Son of Joseph Dumais and Ernestine Côté of St-François-Xavier-des-Hauteurs, Rimouski, Québec. When he enlisted, he stated that he was born in 1920.
Enlisted in the Royal 22nd Regiment, he embarked from Halifax, Nova Scotia, on July 15, 1940, bound for Great Britain, and landed in Glasgow, Scotland, on August 1, 1940. On June 15, 1943, with Force M, he set sail for Sicily as part of Operation Husky, where he landed on July 10 with the second wave of the assault. On September 10, he landed on the Italian mainland and on October 6, 1943, he was seriously wounded by shrapnel. He was hospitalized in various hospitals until May 7, 1944. On July 25, he was assigned to the 4th Battalion of the Royal 22nd Regiment, which he joined on the 26th. He was wounded again by gunfire on February 4, 1945, along the Senio River in the Russi sector. He died on the 5th at the 13th Canadian Field Ambulance. He had served 1,798 days, including 1,666 overseas.
