Lance Sergeant Phalen enlisted as a rifleman in The Queen's Own Rifles in June 1940. He served in Newfoundland, New Brunswick and in England and landed on D-Day with Baker Company of the Regiment. Lance Sergeant Phalen was killed during the battle for Carpiquet airfield (west of Caen). -
