My grandfather, Harry Gilbert Palmer, belonged to the the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, the R.C.C.S. Like many other Canadians, he enlisted before Canada was officially at war. He went overseas in 1939, to serve in an advance party of the battalion. He transferred to the the Royal Marines Reserve - the R.M.R. - and served as a signals officer. A mechanical engineer by trade, he helped to set up, and was instrumental in operating, the Canadian telecommunications network in Europe. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corp - R.C.O.C - and was sent to Italy, in Oct 1943. He died in Feb 1944, after a can of petrol, believed at the time to be water, exploded in his tent. -
