John Baillie was captured on February 21, 1941, by the crew of the German battleship Admiral Scheer, was interned in the British Merchant Navy's German camp Marlag/Milag Nord at Westerkimbke, Germany, where he died on February 1, 1944, and was buried.
The Canadian Cruiser was intercepted by the German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer on February 21, 1941, 500 miles (805 km) north of Zanzibar, Mozambique, in the Indian Ocean. The freighter was scuttled and sunk. The crew was taken prisoner and transported to France and then to Germany.
