Baptized Jean Bernard Benwell on 22 December 1922 at the Anglican Church of Port-Daniel, Bonaventure. He abjured Anglicanism to become Catholic.

Son of William James Benwell and Annie Inez Huntington, of Port-Daniel, Québec.

He served in Québec, in Hong Kong with Force C and in Japan as prisoner of war. He had 859 days of service, including 683 overseas.

YOKOHAMA WAR CEMETERY Japan

YOKOHAMA WAR CEMETERY is 9 kilometres west of the city on Yuenchi-Dori, Hodogaya Ward, which branches left off the old Tokkaido highway. The nearest railway station is Hodogaya, 5 kilometres to the north on the JNR line but the cemetery is easily reached by bus from Yokohama station.
