Son of Walter Martin Nichol and Olive Elizabeth Johnston, of Darlingford, Manitoba.

Brother of Private William M. Nichol, who survived the fighting in Europe during the Second World War. He enlisted with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and transferred to the 1st Battalion, Winnipeg Grenadiers on October 20th, 1941 to fight in Hong Kong. He had 847 days of service, including 350 overseas.

To commemorate his sacrifice, the Manitoba government named Nichol Lake located northeast of North Knife Lake in his honor in 1957.
