Son of John Sayers and Elizabeth Pruden. Husband of Harriet Malvina Wells (a.k.a. Henrietta Melvina), of Battleford, Saskatchewan. Father of Beatrice Audrey, Suzanne, Gerald Harvey, Violet Muriel, Ernest Walter, Claude Bernard, Phillip Orvile, all of Saskatchewan.

He enlisted with the Saskatoon Light Infantry and transferred to the 1st Battalion, Royal Rifles of Canada on October 25th, 1941 to fight in Hong Kong with C Force. He had 564 days of service, including 421 overseas.

To commemorate his sacrifice, the Saskatchewan government named Sayers Lake in his honor.
