Sioux Metis, he was born as Joseph Jean Antonin Sioux. Son of Napoleon Sioux and Virginie Ducharme of St. Laurent, Manitoba.

Enrolled from November 22nd, 1940 to December 21st, 1941 in the Winnipeg Light Infantry - NPAM - regimental number H-500839, then in the 17 Quots of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in Winnipeg, regimental number H-41699, to serve in Manitoba and Ontario before being transferred on October 21st, 1941 to the 1st Battalion of the Winnipeg Grenadiers to fight in Hong Kong with "C" Force. He had 543 days of service, including 385 overseas.

To commemorate his sacrifice, the Manitoba government named Sioux Lake located southeast of Tadoule Lake in his honor in 1975.
