Son of Molenne McPhail. Husband of Mary Eva Diola Welsh. Father of Mary Agnes Rosalie, Ernie Lloyd, Stanford Alvin, Lawrence Edwin and Gordon Arlie Welsh, all from Entry Island, Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Québec. His widow remarried Bernard Leslie Chenell, service number E-30389, Royal Rifles of Canada, prisoner of war in Hong Kong and Japan.

James served in Québec, in New Brunswick, in Newfoundland with Force W, in Hong Kong with Force C and was prisoner of war. He had 770 days of service, including 343 overseas.
