The Havtör was on route without a cargo from Reykjavik, Iceland, to Pictou, Nova Scotia, without escort when, on June 11, 1941, at 8:51 p.m., she was torpedoed by U-79 southwest of Iceland. On the 12th, at 12:33 a.m., seeing that the ship refused to sink, the German commander had it cannoned, position 63°35'N/28°05'W.
