The Kyno was on route from New York, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Hull, England, with convoy HX-66 when on August 28, 1940, at 8:57 p.m., she was torpedoed and sunk by U-28 30 miles (48 km) north-north-east of Rockall, Ireland, position 58°06'N/13°26'W. Five sailors lost their lives. The 33 survivors, including the captain, were rescued by the SS Queen Maud and landed in Methill, Scotland.
