He was baptized under the name Joseph Arthur Henri Baron.

Son of Israel Baron and Georgianna Marion, of Ste-Appolinaire, Québec.

On November 4, 1941, the Meridian was trailing behind with convoy SC-53 heading for Hvaljford, Norway. On November 11, at 11:35 p.m., U-561 fired four torpedoes at the Meridian and the ship quickly sank with its 26 sailors. The last ship to see her was HMCS Chambly (K116), Royal Canadian Navy, at about 5:30 p.m. on November 11, position 52°50'N/33°20'W. This sinking was officially recorded on November 23, 1941, the date of the announcement of his disappearance.
