On June 22, 1941, at 10:36 p.m., the Arakaka, used as a weather station in the North Atlantic, was torpedoed and sunk by U-77 about 450 miles (724 km) east of St. John's, Newfoundland, position 47°00'N/40°40'W. The captain, 32 crew members and seven Admiralty personnel were killed. There were no survivors.
