On March 4, 1942, at 1:10 a.m., the Empire Masheer was sailing with convoy DN-21 when she was torpedoed by U-160 and sunk east-north-east of East London, South Africa, position 32°01'S/30°48'E. Of the crew, 17 sailors and one gunner lost their lives. The captain, 29 seamen and six gunners were recovered by the British armed trawler HMS Norwich City (FY229) and landed in Durban, South Africa.
