Son of Walter Smith Candow and Jessie Gertrude Evans, of Newfoundland. Husband of Elizabeth Mae Ford, of Newfoundland. Father of five children, including Nellie, Walter, Frederick Terrance and Lorraine Candow, of Newfoundland.

The logbook of U-552 indicates that one of the three torpedoes hit the stern of the Nerissa at 12:27 a.m. on May 1, 1941, position 55°57'N/10°08'W. There were 91 survivors disembarked in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, by HMS Kingcup (K33) of the Royal Navy after being rescued by HMS Veteran (D72).
