Son of William Carew and Cecilia Doody, of Newfoundland. Husband of Allie Carew, of Curling East, Newfoundland.

On September 3, 1944, she was on her way to Newfoundland without escort when she was torpedoed at 8:45 a.m. off Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, by U-541 and sank with 14 crew members and one gunner, position 46°15'N/58°05'W. The captain, 12 sailors and a gunner were rescued by the Canadian corvette HMCS Barrie (K138) who landed them in St. John's, Newfoundland.
