His real name is Thomas Cripps.

Son of John Wellington Cripps and Jessie Phillips Bosence of Toronto, Ontario. John enlisted in Toronto on 7 December 1915, with the 123rd Battalion (Royal Grenadiers), regimental number 766560, Canadian Expeditionary Force. Transferred to the 123rd Battalion Canadian Engineers, he fought in France. He was demobilized on 25 May 1919 in Quebec City, Quebec.

On 20 March 1943, Fort Mumford was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine I-27 500 miles (805 km) north-west of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), in the Arabian Sea, position 10°00'N/71°00'W. In accordance with Imperial Japanese policy, the prisoners of war were murdered with machine guns. The only survivor was able to tell the story. As a result of the slaughter, 46 crew members, including the captain, and four of the five gunners, lost their lives.
