Burial/memorial information
On 20 April 1941, at 9:03 pm, the Vineland was sailing unescorted north of Cap haïtien (Haiti) when she was torpedoed by U-154. At 9.20 pm, she received the coup de grâce, five shells fired from the deck gun, and sank in position 23°05'N/72°20'W. Only one sailor lost his life. The 33 other crew members, including the captain, were interrogated and left to their fate. They landed on Turks and Caicos after being towed by a fishing boat.
