Son of Levi William Hardy and Mary Chatfield Canning of Ingonish, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Brother of Corporal William Harris Hardy, Regimental Number F-32735, of the West Nova Scotia Regiment, killed in action in Italy on 13 December 1944, Privates Walter Gordon Hardy and Wilfred Cecil Hardy, who fought in Europe, and Mable Hardy, who served overseas in the Second World War.
A member of convoy HX-133, she was torpedoed at 0030 hours on 29 June 1941 by U-651 and sank off Iceland, position 59°30'N/18°07'W.
