On 22 September 1940, at 0.22 am, the Empire Airman was sailing with convoy HX-72 from Wabana, Newfoundland, to Halifax, Nova Scotia, then on to Cardiff, Wales, when she was damaged by a torpedo launched from U-100 about 340 miles (547 km) west of Bloody Foreland, Ireland, position 54°00'N/18°00'W. Towed, she sank on the 23rd with the captain, 31 crew members and one gunner, position 55°11'N/15°07'W. Four sailors were rescued by the British corvette HMS La Malouine (K46), which landed them in Greenock, Scotland.
