On 26 February 1941, the Kasongo was en route from Liverpool, England, to Freetown, Sierra Leone, then on to Matadi, Congo, with convoy OB-290 when she was torpedoed by U-47 and sunk in position 55°50'N/14°20'W. Six crew members out of the 48 sailors on board lost their lives. The survivors were rescued by the British corvette HMS Campanula (K18), which landed them in Gourock, Scotland.
