On 17 June 1942, the Waiwera left Liverpool, England, when on 29 June, at 6:10 am, she was torpedoed by U-754 approximately 400 miles (644 km) north-north-west of the Azores, in the North Atlantic, position 45°49'N/34°29'W. Seven crew members and one gunner were killed. The captain, 71 sailors, 6 gunners and 20 military passengers were rescued by the SS Oregon Express, which landed them in New York. The captain and first mate were awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and Lloyd's War Medal for their bravery at sea.
