Additional information
Husband of Mrs. John I. MacSween, of St. John's, Newfoundland. His name is also commemorated on page 274 of the Merchant Navy Book of Remembrance.

On 7 February 1943, at 3:52 am, the Robert E. Hopkins was hit by a torpedo launched from U-402, while sailing towards Glasgow, Scotland, with convoy SC-118, 650 miles (1,046 km) west of Malin Head, Ireland. At 4:02 am, another torpedo exploded on her starboard side and the tanker sank in less than three minutes, in position 55°13'N/26°22'W. One officer, 13 sailors and one gunner lost their lives. The 42 survivors were rescued by the British corvette HMS Mignonette (K38) and landed on the 10th in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
