On 9 June 1940, Baron Loudoun was sailing in convoy with HG-334F when she was torpedoed at 2:56 am by U-48. She sank west-north-west of Cape Ortegal, Spain, position 45°00'N/11°21'W. Three crew members were killed, while the captain and 29 other sailors were recovered by HMS Scarbrough (L25) and landed in Liverpool, England
