On 7 February 1943, the Henry R. Mallory was part of convoy SC-118, en route from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Reykjavik, Iceland. At 6:59 am on the same day, she was torpedoed by U-402 around 600 miles (966 km) south-southwest of Iceland. She sank 30 minutes after the torpedo hit, in position 55°18'N/26°29'W. The attack cost the lives of the captain, 48 crew members, 15 armed guards and 208 passengers.
